A sales resume gets judged on one thing faster than any other: numbers. A sales leader scanning for an AE, SDR, or enterprise rep wants to see quota attainment, revenue closed, and where you ranked — ideally in the first five seconds. Add the applicant tracking system (ATS) that screens the file first, and the job is clear: lead with proof you sell. This guide shows how to build a sales resume that clears both gates, and our Sales Resume Template gives you the clean, results-forward foundation to start from.
What makes a sales resume work
Strong sales resumes share four things: quantified attainment (percent of quota, dollars closed), ranking (top 5%, President's Club, #2 of 40 reps), clear progression (SDR to AE, growing territory), and a tight, scannable layout. In sales, your resume is itself a pitch — it should demonstrate that you can lead with value and back it with proof.
The structure that gets read
- Header: name, target title, location, email, phone, LinkedIn.
- Summary: two or three lines with a headline metric — "AE with 5 years closing six-figure SaaS deals, 130%+ of quota three years running."
- Skills: CRM, methodologies, and tools (below).
- Experience: reverse-chronological, every role led by attainment.
- Education & awards: degree plus President's Club and ranking honors.
Make it ATS-friendly
The ATS parses your resume before a human sees it, so keep it clean: a single-column layout, standard section headings, no key text locked in tables or graphics, and a .docx file unless PDF is requested. Mirror the job's language — if it asks for "SaaS," "net-new logos," or "MEDDIC," use those exact terms where they're true. Our ATS-friendly resume guide has the full checklist.
The numbers that matter in sales
If a bullet doesn't have a number, it's a missed opportunity. Reach for:
- Quota attainment: "122% of a $1.4M annual quota."
- Revenue / bookings: total closed, new vs. expansion.
- Ranking: "#3 of 45 AEs," "top 8% company-wide."
- Deal size & cycle: average ACV, sales-cycle length.
- New logos & pipeline: accounts landed, pipeline generated.
Experience: lead with attainment
Open every role with the result, then show how. Use action verb + what you did + measurable result. Compare:
- Weak: "Responsible for managing a sales territory."
- Strong: "Closed $2.3M in new ARR at 142% of quota — ranked #2 of 38 AEs and earned President's Club."
- Strong: "Grew territory pipeline 3x in 12 months, landing 14 net-new enterprise logos."
Your skills section: CRM, methodology, tools
- CRM & platforms: Salesforce, HubSpot, Outreach, Salesloft.
- Methodologies: MEDDIC, Challenger, SPIN, Sandler.
- Prospecting & data: ZoomInfo, LinkedIn Sales Navigator, cold outreach, discovery.
List what you actually use, and lead with what the role names.
Common sales resume mistakes
- No numbers. "Exceeded targets" with nothing to back it — by how much?
- No ranking. Attainment is good; attainment plus "#2 of 38" is undeniable.
- Listing duties. "Made calls, sent emails" describes the job, not your results.
- Too long. One page for most reps; two only with the tenure to justify it.
- One generic version. Not tailoring to each role — here's how to tailor a resume in 15 minutes.
Frequently asked questions
How long should a sales resume be?
One page for most reps and mid-career sellers. Two pages only when senior or enterprise tenure genuinely warrants it — and every line should carry a number.
What if I missed quota some years?
Lead with your strongest, most representative numbers and provide context where it helps (a new territory, a ramp year). Show trajectory and wins rather than apologizing for off years.
Should I include President's Club and rankings?
Absolutely — they're among the most persuasive things on a sales resume. Put them in your summary or a dedicated awards line where they're easy to spot.
Do I need to tailor it per role?
Tune it: reorder skills and mirror the keywords in each job description so the most relevant wins and terms sit up top.
