How to Tailor Your Resume to a Job Description (in 15 Minutes)

The single highest-return resume habit is also the one most people skip: tailoring it to each job. You don't need to rewrite from scratch - 15 focused minutes per application is enough to dramatically improve your odds. Here's the process.

Step 1: Mine the job description for keywords

Read the posting and highlight the repeated skills, tools, and phrases - especially anything in the requirements. These are the terms the recruiter, and the ATS, will look for.

Step 2: Match them to your real experience

For each key term you genuinely have, make sure it appears in your accomplishments - using the posting's exact wording where it's honest to do so. If it says client onboarding, don't write customer setup.

Step 3: Reorder for relevance

Move your most relevant bullets and skills to the top of each section. Readers spend the most attention there, so put the strongest matches where they'll be seen first.

Step 4: Tune your summary

Rewrite your top two or three lines to echo the role. A summary that mirrors the job title and core requirement instantly reads as right fit.

Step 5: Cut what doesn't serve this job

Trim or shorten the bullets that aren't relevant to make room for the ones that are. Tailoring is as much about removing noise as adding keywords.

One warning: don't keyword-stuff

Tailoring means honest alignment, not gaming the system. Only claim what's true - a recruiter will spot a mismatch in the interview fast.
