How to Optimize Your LinkedIn Profile to Get Found by Recruiters

Recruiters don't scroll LinkedIn hoping to stumble across you. They search - typing job titles, skills, and locations into the search bar and contacting the people who surface. If your profile isn't built around the words they search, you stay invisible no matter how good you are.

Optimizing your profile comes down to two things: showing up in those searches, and giving a recruiter a reason to message you once you do. Here's how.

Start with your headline - your most valuable real estate

Your headline follows your name everywhere on LinkedIn and is heavily weighted in search. Don't waste it on your job title alone. Use the format Role | Specialties and keywords | The value you bring. For example: Registered Nurse | ICU and Critical Care | Patient-First, Detail-Obsessed. Lead with the title recruiters search, then add the keywords that set you apart.

Write an About section that gets found and read

The first two or three lines show before the see more cut, so open with a hook - who you help and what you're known for. Then write a few short first-person paragraphs covering your focus, a couple of concrete wins, and the roles you want next. Work in the same keywords a recruiter would search, naturally.

Put the right keywords in the right places

LinkedIn search weights certain fields heavily: your headline, About, job titles, and Skills. Make a short list of the terms recruiters in your field actually use - tools, certifications, role titles - and make sure they appear across those fields. Fill all your Skills slots and pin the three most important; endorsements on those carry weight.

Turn your experience into results, not duties

Anyone can list responsibilities. Recruiters remember outcomes. For each role, lead your bullets with what changed because you were there - numbers, scale, speed, money saved. Cut onboarding time 30% beats responsible for onboarding.

Signal that you're active

Profiles that post, comment, and engage surface more often and look more credible. You don't need to go viral - a thoughtful comment a few times a week, the occasional short post about your field, and an up-to-date Open to Work setting (visible to recruiters only, if you prefer) all help.

Don't skip the basics

  • A clear, friendly headshot - profiles with photos get far more engagement.
  • A custom URL - clean up linkedin.com/in/yourname for your resume and email signature.
  • Correct location and industry - recruiters filter by both.
